Head instructor George E. Smith-Tala is a Jigoro/Gracie lineage Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt with over 24 years of training. The journy of jiu-jitsu started with Kano Jigoro < Mitsuyo Maeda < Carlos Gracie < Helio Gracie < Francisco Mansur < Joe Moreira < Ricardo Teixeira < Efrian Ruiz < George Smith-Tala. Instructor Tala brings old school Jiu-Jitsu knowlegde to North Carolina. George started training in the mid 1990's when jiu-jitsu was just beginning in South Florida. Instructor Tala is one of the only Old School instructors around in North Carolina, transplanted from one of the epiccenters of jiu-jitsu in the 90's, Miami! Born in St. Louis, MO. George moved to Miami in 1980. His Last name, Tala, meaning stalking wolf, originates from a his Native American heritage. George is currently part of Zen Jiu-Jitsu and has trained and mentored Enrico Cocco, a 3x ADCC trials champion, and his students. Further, George taught at Zen Jiu-Jitsu Miami, Alliance Miami, South Florida Jiu-Jitsu and Free Style Fighting Academy.
As a trained professional boxing coach by Ben Collins, George spent several years at Warriors Boxing gym in Hollywood, FL, home to world champion fighters.
George's ability to teach all types of learning styles has set him apart from other instructors. He skillfully customizes training programs to benefit each student, adults and children.
Some of George's training partners have included Enrico Cocco, Vagner Rocha (UFC Veteran) Moacir "Boca" Oliveira, Roberto "Cyborg" Abru, Ruban Alverez, Poblo Popovitch, Jorge Masvidal (UFC Veteran), Charles McCarthy (UFC Veteran) and David Avellan.
After spending many years as a Critical Care RN and Educator, George now teaches Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and MMA full time in North Carolina.
